Cultivating Wellness Through Movement and Pilates
Nanette’s journey in Pilate’s began unexpectedly in her early years as a dancer in the Theatre of Harlem in New York City. At just nine years old, Nanette began to have knee pain that mirrored her dance teacher’s career-ending injury. Under her teacher and doctors recommendation, Nanette was introduced to Pilates to strengthen her body. This recommendation sparked a newfound passion for Pilates, setting Nanette on a path of personal and professional transformation. Throughout her ongoing journey, Nanette immersed herself in the wisdom of Carola Trier, a protégé of Joseph Pilates himself. This experience brought about her metamorphosis into a catalyst for self-renewal. What once seemed like setbacks in Nanette’s path have blossomed into unexpected gifts, paving the way for profound personal growth and a rewarding ability to guide others toward transformation.
As a teacher of classical Pilates, and collaborator with Juice Plus, Nanette’s commitment to health and wellness is at the core of her professional life. Nanette is committed to fostering informed individuals by coaching and guiding her clients in classical forms of movement and mobility.
“Teaching Pilates is a mindful experience,” Nanette explains. “It requires full presence, energizing both instructor and client.”
This dedication to mindful movement reflects Nanette’s approach to life – always seeking growth and deeper understanding. As an expert in the field, Nanette is focusing on expanding her reach by gathering more private clients to share her powerful and influential teachings of Pilates and wellness.
Legacy Leadership: A Catalyst for Professional Expansion
Within the expansion of Nanette’s life, her decision to join the Legacy Leadership cohort came at a pivotal moment in her professional journey towards complete personal and business independence. Reflecting on her choice, she expressed that she did not know when an opportunity like Legacy Leadership was going to manifest itself again. It felt right. Nanette’s path took an unexpected and serendipitous turn when she met Sagdrina Brown Jalal at a local Pilates studio. This encounter was more than just a chance meeting; it was a testament to the opportunities that arise when Nanette follows her passion. In that moment, she was eager to explore what else the world had to offer and to push herself outside of her comfort zone.
“I really want to move into a new space, and this was offered to me. So, I’m going to do that. I’m going to see where it is.”
Being surrounded and inspired by the women around her, some with established businesses and practices, Nanette has embraced the opportunity with a willingness to learn and grow from the insights that have been gained during Executive leadership sessions and Community of Practice meetings , showcasing her commitment to strengthening her presence as a catalyst for change amongst all personal, community and professional spaces, such as The LOLA.
Witnessing the synergy of the Legacy Leadership cohort, SageD Collective, and the women of The LOLA, Nanette is expanding her horizons and engaging in the values of sistering and collaboration, key tenets of the collective. This is where Nanette’s journey to self-discovery continues to flourish, surrounded by a nurturing network.
The platform created by the Legacy Leadership allows black women like Nanette to do what comes natural; connect, learn, and grow together, fostering a sense of mutual aid and reciprocity.
“Community is a big part of who we are as Black people. It’s natural for us to support each other,” Nanette states.
Embracing these values, Nanette has found herself not just as a participant, but an integral part of a thriving, nurturing network that emphasizes education, advocacy, and mutual support.

“I’m learning to step out of my comfort zone and give back more effectively,” Nanette says. “I love being a cheerleader for good people and seeing them shine.”
